Believers in Town

The development of coastal cities in Taiwan can be traced back to the settlement of the ancestors who migrated across the strait. Since their belief supported them to overcome fear and worry of the unknown during the settlement, temples have become the heart of local regions.

Jiali District, centering on Jingtang Temple, has passed down traditions of economy, art, education, and belief which carry diverse cultural connotations about communities, groups, and society for a hundred of years. Traces left by time can not only be found in architecture but also in public spaces and streets around the buildings and thus mingle with cultural pulse and fluid emotions in the surrounding areas.

In temple decorations, cut-and-paste crafts are commonly seen in the themes of well-known folk literature and endowed with educational and historical significance. The imagery is used to record the outline of streets around Jingtang Temple and depict geographical images of Jiali District. Through 3D scanning, the images of everyday street views seem to develop into a record of anecdote passing on stories about Jiali. Just like the ancient buildings that are still existing nowadays, this project aims to preserve memories about contemporary townships by digital technology.
